Have you ever bought a hoodie that felt soft in the store, only to lose its shape after three washes? Or a garment that felt more like a thin shirt than a proper layer of protection?
At Konna Clothing, we decided to do things differently.
When designing our first piece, the Konna Minimal Hoodie, we weren’t looking for the cheapest fabric. We were looking for the best. In this deep dive, we break down exactly what 400 GSM means, why we chose organic French Terry, and why Portugal was the only choice for manufacturing.
What Does 400 GSM Actually Mean?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It is the industry standard for measuring the density and weight of a fabric.
- Fast Fashion Hoodies: Typically range from 150–300 GSM. They often feel flimsy and wear out quickly.
- Standard Premium: Usually around 350 GSM.
- The Konna Standard: 400 GSM.
Our 400 GSM hoodie represents true “heavyweight” quality. It isn’t just a number; it’s a feeling. When you pull this hoodie on, you feel the structure. It drapes beautifully, holds its shape, and doesn’t cling. It feels like armor against the wind, yet remains soft against the skin.
Why We Chose Organic French Terry
Weight is only half the story. The weave of the fabric defines how it performs. We chose 100% Organic French Terry cotton.
While many premium hoodies use a “loopback” interior, we wanted something that offers genuine warm and comfy for the Northern climate. Our fabric undergoes a specialized brushing process that raises the fibers, creating a soft, fleece-like texture inside without the use of cheap synthetics.

- Unmatched Softness: The moment you pull it on, the difference is undeniable. It feels soft and comforting against the skin and is never scratchy or rough.
- Feels warm: The brushed fibers create tiny air pockets that trap body heat, keeping you warm when it is cold morning or late chilly evening.
- Breathability: Because our hoodie is crafted from high-quality cotton, it keeps you warm without the “suffocating” feeling of fast-fashion fleece. It breathes with you.
Made in Portugal: The Home of Premium Organic Cotton
We could have manufactured our hoodies in Asia for a fraction of the cost. We chose not to.
We produce in Portugal, widely considered the “Silicon Valley” of high-quality European textiles. This is the place where we found artisans capable of handling our dense 400 gsm organic cotton with the precision it requires.
- Craftsmanship: We work with a factory where textile manufacturing is a heritage skill. They understand that a heavyweight hoodie requires specialized machinery and a slower production pace to ensure the brushed interior remains soft wash after wash.
- Fair Labor: Manufacturing in the EU guarantees strict labor laws, fair wages, and safe working conditions. We have visited the factory floor personally to ensure the people making your Konna hoodie are treated with the respect they deserve.
- Quality Control: Proximity allows us to maintain an uncompromising standard. Every stitch on our 400 gsm cotton garments is inspected to meet our “built to last” promise.
The Verdict: An Investment in 400 GSM Quality
In a world of disposable fashion, spending bit more on a hoodie might seem like a commitment. And it is.
But consider the Cost Per Wear. A very cheap fast-fashion hoodie made of thin synthetic blends loses its shape and softness after three months. It ends up being expensive trash.
The Konna Minimal Hoodie, crafted from 100% organic heavyweight cotton, is engineered to be a staple in your wardrobe for years. Whether you are chopping wood in the freezing Lapland winter or heading to a business casual meeting, the structure of the 400 gsm fabric keeps you looking sharp and feeling warm.
We built this hoodie because we were tired of compromising. We believe you are too.
